I made a fan album cover for OCTMS, assuming that’s the title and the boat/whale picture will be used on it… (so this is pretty much all based on guesses, none of it is really confirmed yet) ;)
My *honest* opinions. In which I see both sides of the argument.
Because I don’t think I’ve said nearly enough.
Also, it’s very long. But please read/like/reblog if you agree if you have the time. It took me a long time. Also, reply/message me/somehow let me know if you completely disagree. Your opinions are always interesting!
& This is probably a bit messed up & repetitive because I should be sleeping. Sorry. But here we go:So many fans (e.g. that video) are being so melodramatic. I (& Adam, probably) understand(s) that you all have opinions that you want to share, share them. But, don’t expect everyone to agree with you.
I’ve said this before, but I genuinely love the new sound. I’ll admit, they don’t have the dreamy/ambiguous lyrics that I first fell in love with. There’s still the chance that other songs on the full album will have them.
I also agree that the fact it was just Adam gave Owl City that extra little bit of Stardust. (Not saying that he’s lost that stardust, because he still has it & will never lose it!)
And, I’ll admit that I’m very, very, suspicious about this whole new producers thing at Universal.
Suspicious things:
- None of the producers have any experience in Owl City-type music. Infact, and in all honesty: I personally HATE every song on their Discographies. Which isn’t a good sign. I think one of them did S&M by Rihanna! Eurgh
- I read this on wikipedia last night:
Owl City’s label deal with Universal Republic was finally confirmed in February 2009.[8] According to [Steve] Bursky [manager] there was initially some disagreement about the direction Owl City should follow, telling HitQuarters: “They were ready to send him into the studio with big producers and polish him up to try to become this thing that he wasn’t. But we put our foot down and said, ‘Look, the reason you signed this kid is because it’s working. Whatever it is about him - his music, his interaction with his fans, his brilliance in the online space - these things are connecting with people, and as soon as you change that you lose what’s special about this artist.’ To their credit, they really listened and they got it.”
So, I get the feeling that as part of that ^ contract/deal, Adam probably needed to sell a certain amount of records & keep it up.
- Adam said that he was at first a bit scared of introducing new producers/song writers. So, that most likely means including them wan’t his initial idea. Which worries me a little.
- Adam is on the Album cover. Not an arty image. I’m not saying that he isn’t Arty in his nice little waistcoat, but he hasn’t done that before.
- The EP is called Shooting Star. He’s never before had a “title track”/named his Owl City EP/Album after one of the tracks. He’s always had an original title with matching cover.
- The song titles - they’re different too. They’re not ambiguous/2 words that don’t usually fit.
- Adam’s sudden use of Instagram & a smartphone (?). He used to say how much he despised new phones. Could be a marketing thing. I doubt it. Adam doesn’t seem very sell out-y (Though, I can imagine him seeing instagram for the first time and thinking “cool”)
- Change of music video director
